It’s not unusual to see a local pro surfer or two testing their skills here, so it’s a great spot to watch others surf even if you don’t go out into the water yourself. ![]() The waves here are right-hand hollow, barrel waves. However, those who rise to the challenge can experience world-class surfing during high tide. There are a few exceptions, so beginners might spot some waves to build their confidence, but they’re usually only suitable for very experienced surfers. Much of the hike has scenic vistas of the town nestled in the hills. On the other hand, the Mirador La Bufa is about a 30 minute hike North of the San Sebastian city center. Sort of disappointing after a 3+ hour excursion. While the trek up La Bufa was at times scenic, once we got to the top, clouds had rolled in so we didn't get views of anything. After driving for closer to an hour from San Sebastian, we finally gave up and parked and hiked the remaining 2 miles to the peak (which took about 2 hours, and we are in pretty good shape having hiked Manchu Picchu in the recent past). The roads are primarily dirt or cobblestone and riddled with potholes, so you can't drive fast (and it is open to debate whether the road should be traversed in a normal car). To go to the actual mountain, it is not a 30 minute drive if you are in a regular car, as Google map suggests. Mirador La Bufa takes more searching, but it's not clear to me which La Bufa everyone here is reviewing. La Bufa (the actual mountain, or Cerro de La Bufa) comes up first. From San Sebastian del Oeste, Google maps will find two La Bufa destinations. ![]()
